Alzheimer’s

Almost 4000 scientists gathered in Hawaii this July for the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference on Alzheimer’s disease. Information was presented on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Several reports showed that persons with Alzheimer’s disease are at a higher risk to develop other diseases as well. Some reports showed possible increases in cognitive ability using medications, food and other environmental changes. For more information on the event and reports go to www.alz.org. Medicaid Providers

The Expired Credential Notices are in the mail. Medicaid participation requires that providers submit a copy of their recent LTC license for continued participation. Be sure to put your Medicaid provider numbers on the copy of the license you send. You may fax your credentials to 501-374-0746 or mail to:

Safety Alert for Sprinkler Systems

Fatal fire raises concern about antifreeze

July 6, 2010 – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) today issued a safety alert (follow the link for the alert) recommending that residential fire sprinkler systems containing antifreeze should be drained and the antifreeze replaced with water. The Office of Long Term Care asked that we pass this along.

Association Meeting and Seminar

There will be a Seminar on Regulation Issues on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m., seminar at 10:00 a.m., and scheduled to end at 12:00 noon, at the Holiday Inn Airport, Bankhead Drive, in Little Rock. The purpose of the meeting is to look at problem areas with the different facility type regulations, difficult survey problems, reimbursement and legal problems. Operators will have an opportunity to discuss problems with operators of like licensure. It will help the ARALA in determining issues that could be addressed with OLTC and the legislature. If you would like certain topics discussed and would like to remain anonymous, you may include them on a separate sheet with your registration. Topics may be brought up in the meeting. Some regulations are germane to all licensure types and some affect only yours so bring your copy of your regulations with you.

There will be an Association Meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at 12:00 noon, at the Holiday Inn Airport in Little Rock. Certified Administrators will receive four hours CEUs for attending both meetings. Sherri Proffer and Cindy Scoggins will be there to discuss the survey process. Most of us have not met Cindy Scoggins yet and this will be an opportunity to do so. Mike Mitchell will have information on the Legislative races. The cost of the meeting for the day, including lunch and refreshments is $70 for members, $95 for non-members. Persons who wish to attend the Association Meeting only will receive two hours (2) CEUs for attendance and the cost of the meal is $20.

ARALA Online CEUs

If you missed the All Hazards Response Planning or the Effective Communications Seminars this year all is not lost. One may view those seminars online and take a test for credit. To access this, go to the Education navigation bar and click on the Continuing Education item. On this page you will find the policies and procedures of the program and the registration sheet. Information about the number of CEUs and the price of each offering is on the registration form. Print off the registration form, fill it out and mail or fax it back to the ARALA office. You will receive the password to the page, the test and evaluation sheet. Then view the video and complete the test. When completed, return the test and evaluation form to the ARALA office. To get credit one must score at least 80% on the test. Your documentation of completion will be returned by mail. For more information get the procedures sheet from the website.
